Getting Started with Towing Your Boat

Towing a boat isn't that complicated. If you've done your research before buying a boat, you likely also have a truck or SUV that's capable of towing it and the proper trailer. To find out what your vehicle can tow, you'll need to find its maximum towing capacity and then compare that to the weight of the boat and trailer.

Many modern vehicles have advanced systems that make trailering a lot easier than it used to be. Features like trailer sway control, backup cameras, and integrated brake controllers can take much of the stress out of the process. When towing, make wide turns to avoid clipping curbs or obstacles, and take it slow. Always check your mirrors frequently to ensure the trailer is tracking properly and is still securely attached. With a little preparation and the right setup, towing your boat can be a safe and manageable part of your boating adventure.

Positioning the Boat for Towing

When preparing to tow a boat, there are a few steps to take. Start by evenly distributing any gear on the boat so the weight is balanced. Tie down all loose equipment on the boat. After you attach the trailer to your vehicle, cross the tow chains beneath the frame. Measure the boat and trailer to find your new clearance for length and height.

Driving Tips for Towing a Boat

If you've never towed anything before, the most daunting part about towing a boat is probably driving. There are some basic things to keep in mind when towing a boat or anything else, for that matter. Always accelerate and brake slowly. It will take longer to slow down and get up to speed when you're towing.

Allow for significant space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you in case you have to brake suddenly. Make sure to turn wider than you usually would to prevent the trailer from hitting curbs or cutting corners too tightly. Checking your mirrors often can help you monitor for any obstructions or sway.

How to Launch Your Boat From the Trailer

Park somewhere near the ramp and prepare your boat for launch. Check that the drain plug is installed, load all the gear you'll need onto your boat, put the boat key in the ignition, unplug the trailer lights, and free the boat from most of the ties holding it down. You should also place fenders around the boat and tie dock lines to the cleats.

Once you're ready to launch and it's your turn at the ramp, back the trailer slowly into the ramp. Before launching, leave the winch strap connected until the boat is partially in the water. This ensures the boat doesn’t slide off the trailer prematurely, especially on steeper ramps. Keep going back until the boat's stern starts to float. Stop the vehicle and set the parking brake. Note: This step is easier with two people. At this point, you'll need to free the boat from all its straps, and someone should climb on board. Once the boat is safely off the trailer, you can park your tow vehicle.

How To Retrieve Your Boat From The Water

When you return from boating, you'll need to reverse the steps above. If you're alone, you'll need to tie your boat to the dock and go get the tow vehicle. If you have a second person, you can drop them off at the dock and get the tow vehicle. The person in the boat should idle up to the ramp and wait. When the trailer arrives at the ramp, the boat should be moved into position to load.

The vehicle's driver should line the trailer up straight into the water so the boat can float onto it. The outboard or sterndrive will need to be lifted before moving the boat onto the trailer. Once the boat is positioned correctly, you'll use the trailer winch to pull the boat up and secure it. Before hitting the road, double-check that the boat is properly secured, all gear is stowed, the winch strap is tight, and lights are reconnected. This helps ensure safe travel home.
